Castell'Arquato - Saturday, 10 September

A beautiful, hot day with Carlo, Claudia and their children, Gaia, Stella and Leone, an hour south of Milan in a Medieval town called Castell'Arquato for lunch with a friend of theirs, Alessia, and her inlaws, Laura and Saro, at their home which was built in 1400. Lots of swimming, a beautiful lunch and then a big walk through the town.
And just for us - there was a "Medieval reinactment day" - where we spent most of the afternoon.  Shame I couldn't take the suckling pig home for dinner...
Despite the language barrier, all of the children had a ball.  Alessia's three children (Martina, Emma and Giorgio) go to an English school, and speak English beautifully, which helped!! Ava and Claudia are really throwing themselves at Italian and trying very hard to learn, running up to me all the time to ask how to say something.  They've both asked me to start speaking Italian with them again when we get home, and I can see they're really enjoying understanding a few words here and there, and being understood when they have a go themselves.  I love it and am loving watching their confidence grow.
Then back for a late dinner with Carlo's parents Pucci and Giovanni, who haven't changed a bit in 12 years.  Home and in bed by 11:30 - after another fantastic and busy day.
