After a full day of sightseeing in Paris, we all crashed very early. The girls woke up at about 5am and by 6am we were all up and getting ready for our 7:45am train to Milan. We were out the door by 7am and at the Gare De Lyon by 7:20, feeling very organised – and then managed to board our train with about 4 minutes to spare!!
A seven hour trip through the French countryside – the girls spent their time listening to their iPod touches, Ava singing away and catching a glimpse of her moves in every tunnel – very, very funny. Cameras held up against the windows waiting for the perfect moment to catch a Chateau or snow on the Alps, or an interesting looking tree... Lots of “Or Ma Gord, look at that!!!” Lots of fun, and not without its drama with a young, very well dressed (but not very mentally well) guy of about 17, travelling behind us with his family, causing ‘public disturbance ‘ all the way, walking up and down the train, trying to entertain the passengers in very bad English, but managing very good “Eric from Southpark” impersonations. He was almost thrown off the train at the border by the Italian Police, but his mother managed to keep him on by declaring he was “a little bit crazy, and hadn’t had his medication!” – all very comforting!!
Having lived in Milan in my early twenties (and not having been here for 12 years), it was very exciting for me to pull into Milano Centrale with my girls and have my gorgeous friend Claudia there to meet us. The girls have grown up with stories of Claudia, her husband Carlo and his wonderful family, the Zamparellis, so bit of an exciting moment – mainly for me!
